K Bike Fork Maintenance

Changing Fork Oil:

If changing the fork oil without removing the forks from the bike, place some aliminum foil below the drain plug prior to removing it.  This will keep fork oil from possibly getting on the brake rotor, wheel and tire.

Before removing the drain plug, remove the filler plug in the fork cap. For K75 and 2V K100 forks, a 7/8" open ended box wrench is handy for keeping the fork cap from spinning when you unscrew the filler plug.

Since there are several type of forks for K bikes, it's a good idea to measure how much oil comes out of each fork. (Here's a link to a write-up on fork oil quantites for the various types of K bike forks: K Bike Fork Oil Quantities.)

Since drain plugs are steel and fork lowers are aliminum alloy, be very careful tightening the drain plug or you can easily strip the threads in the fork lower.  It's advisable to use a torque wrench and not exceed BMW's recommended torque of 9 ±1 Nm. (80 in-#) The recommend torque for the filler plug is 15 ±2 Nm. (133 in-#)
